Handgloves Theme for WordPress

Handgloves is a clean, feature rich WordPress theme set in Helvetica.
It is a blogging theme for people who love social media. The sidebar makes a prominent feature of Flickr, Twitter & your latest posts. It has a range of bespoke WP functions such as splitting the archives by year into separate ULs and dynamic features are powered by jQuery 1.2.3
Handgloves was built as an opportunity to learn more about the WP platform and is my first fully featured theme release. I’m more than happy for you to take it, change it, make it your own. As such I have released under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 2.0 License. This means?
Installation & Requirements
Handgloves has only been tested on WP 2.7 and upwards though I would imagine it will work fine on previous versions. The download package comes bundled with the key plugins that it is built to work with (though if you want to get in there and change them – feel free).
The menu is now powered by a back-end options panel! I recognised that this was a big problem in version 1.0 and now thanks to Jeremy Boyd it’s fully integrated.
Flickr support is provided by the excellent Flickr-RSS plugin
Twitter support is provided by a modified version of the Simple-Twitter plugin (supplied)

Beautiful theme George. The comments are refreshing. But does it support threaded comments (since you mentioned testing in WP2.7 but I don’t see the reply button in the comments section)
And also, just wondering when will the next update be released?

Hi Josh,
I’m currently working on another iteration for mid-november loose outline of what’s going to be included is…
- Support for threaded comments
- Support for sub-pages
- Alternative colour-schemes
- Multi-tweet support in the sidebar
i’ll keep you posted

Sounds awesome! Keep up the amazing work.
p.s. I notice your long reply has forced a scroll bar to come up in the reply itself. I thought it would be nicer if the box just expanded along with the length of the comment. My 2 cents. Or it could be just a safari issue.

Thanks for a really good theme.
I look forward to an updated version this November 2009.

Fantastic theme! One of the top 2 themes I have ever used. However I am having some trouble figuring out how to get it to display the “posts twitter flickr” menu at the top like this one does. In fact much of my sidebar’s style looks disfigured. Could you post a “how to” page for setting this stuff up?
I also read your theme makes it easy to post images, but I’m not sure of how it makes it easy. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Oh wait I got it. If you add any widget it removes the sidebar you have. Plus I have a lot of categories and noticed they overlap.

Hello! Fantastic theme. Any sense as to why a Lightbox plugin might break the sidebar? You can see what I mean at the site I’m linking to. I’m no developer, so a bit out of my league. Much appreciated, and keep up the great work!

Hi George, I think it’s brilliant.
Check it out here: http://oliveandarrow.com/intelect/
Was a breeze to set-up; everything worked out of the box.
Thanks for the good work

Hi George – I noticed you were hoping to get version 1.5 out mid-November. Do you have any update on the 1.5 release date? I’m holding out for this new version. Thanks.
December 16, 2009
Hello,
Love the theme, but the top jquery links do not work like on your site… What do I do? I looked into the schmancy box settings, is this where I looked for help and what I need to change on the navigation.php file. I used the no subs file. Let me know if you can help me out.
Thanks
Chris

I echo what Pete has said, eagerly awaiting version 1.5!
December 24, 2009
Great look and feel, very clean! Does this theme have the option to set maximum widths of the images in the posts? I do photography and I am looking to post pics that are at least 700px wide. Also, is there different options for how comments are left? I’m not too fond of the 2 column comments section with scroll. Thanks! Love it.
December 24, 2009
Hi, I too am waiting for the new release, any idea as to when it is coming out? Did you add threaded comment option? Where can I go to change the color of the background box behind categories, comments and sidebar features? Thanks!

Hello I’m from Hong Kong and I love your theme!
However, how can the Post/Twitter/Flickr thing show correctly? Now they just all showed up in the sidebar.
Thanks for the help in advance.
January 15, 2010
Hey, you promised a new version by mid November and we, your fans, are waiting!
Can you provide with a aprox schedule for new releases?
January 19, 2010
I am having an install problem; it says I’m missing stylesheets?
“Theme Install Failed.”
Help?
January 21, 2010
Hi, the install problem is ’cause the zip contains more folders than just the Themefolder, plugins for the theme and so on. Just unzip it on your computer and then upload the “Handgloves”-Theme via ftp or something.
But… the Theme is awesome, but it doesn’t seem to work with wp 2.9.1
Just tried it today and it messed up my wp cache and the comments are not funtioning.
I wait for the new version, hope George would give a sign..
Best regards from germany (so, this is my excuse for the bad english i’m using
)
Dominik
January 21, 2010
The new version is nearly ready! It has all sorts of good stuff – including an admin panel and support for 2.9.1
More early next week…
January 23, 2010
…:)))
January 26, 2010
Version 1.1 is live! Tested up to 2.9.1, but always looking for feedback
January 26, 2010
Fine!
Testing around atm… comments seems functioning now, even with si captcha. First thing i noticed is, the change of colours at the horizontal menu isn’t there anymore. Wanted? If yes, i don’t like it but can live with it, if not, can u fix it?
Looked more clear with different colors (as it is here).
ps: Excuse my bad english, as i said in a previous comment, i’m german. I want to make a german translation of this theme now, if you want i can send you the updated files then. But first, please answer the question with the menu bar
January 26, 2010
Ah well, my fault with the menu bar. Linked everything to home (left it standard), so everything was white, now i added some sites and… works!
January 26, 2010
Ok, after a while of testing i can say, it seems to work fine
Thank you for this marvellous theme. Just a few suggestions that i think would be nice:
First problem: The Comments are arranged left/right, not as usual below. It might be confusing for users being familiar with the “normal” commentpage-design. Also, there is no time given, the comments are just saying the current date.
Solution: Is it possible to make a choice in the admin-panel of the theme between “normal” design and your design? And secondly, is it possible to post the time when a comment was written too?
Second Problem: The Horizontal Menu is laid out for (static) wordpress sites. I want to use my categories as Menu, so i now have to make templates for each site and link the category-content to the site. It’s a bit complicated, especially for wp-newbies.
Solution: Is it possible to link the Sites directly to the categories in the Theme-Options? I think it would be much easier.
So, these were my suggestions of improving this very nice theme. I hope i’m not in the spam-folder now cause of this much comments
But i really like this theme and i want to help improve it
Greetings from germany,
Dominik
January 26, 2010
Hi Dominic,
Thanks for the feedback!
The comment design in Version 1.0 was a bit buggy so I thought it would be good to switch to ‘Masonry’ style to help solve the internal scrolling. I like the idea of having an alternative choice for single column comments option – I will see if this is something I can work in, in version 1.2
I’m not sure what you mean about the second problem – did you want to link to external pages from the main navigation?
Keep the feedback coming!
Cheers,
George
January 26, 2010
The Categories-Thing… my example: I want the categories “politics”, “sports” and another static site, the contact form perhaps, in my blog. So the top horizontal menu should show “Home”, “Politics”, “Sports”, “Contact”(with descriptions). If i click on “Home” => start page (with all blog entries), “politics” => shows all posts under the category politics, “sports” shows all entries of sports and “contact” shows a contact form.
At the handgloves-options at adminpanel, i can just choose sites i made, not categories. But i want! *whining*
Get my point now?
Another thing i noticed: The right sidebar disappears if i add another widget from the admin panel. Also, there is no/just a very creepy CSS for the widgets (if someone decides to use his own widget-sidebar). Can u make a css for those?
Greetings,
Dominik
January 27, 2010
A widgetized sidebar is something I am working on in my personal version of HG. I can probably merge those with George’s for another release.
As for the categories. I don’t know how much work will need to go into it, but we can always try.
February 6, 2010
Hi Jeremy,
Looking for a widgetized sidebar in addition to the scmancy box. I’ve got Handgloves installed now, but if I can’t add some other widgets, I might need to switch themes. Keep me posted.

hi there, this needs to be unzipped before you can upload it, right. only – i can’t unzip this on a mac! can anyone help?? : (
March 1, 2010
@doublesidedcoin – it’s a standard zip file (compressed on a mac) so you shouldn’t have any issues, I would suggest you try and re-download the file, perhaps it’s corrupt or incomplete?
March 2, 2010
Awesome theme, and I just started using it. The only issue I am having is the Posts/twitter/flicker sidebar is appearing on top of each other. But keep up the good work!
March 2, 2010
@jordan sounds like a JavaScript issue, Handgloves is based on jQuery so try disabling other plugins that use JS e.g. Lightbox/Galleries.
March 3, 2010
Love the theme, though I can’t seem to get the sidebar (posts, twitter, etc) to activate properly, even after activating the plugins.
March 4, 2010
Hey George, I love the theme and am using it for my site now…but I’m curious about is how to access some of the CSS stuff. The only adjustment I really want to make is to just make the WP title slightly smaller so that all of the words fit on one line, rather than breaking into two lines. But when I open the Stylesheet in the Editor, it shows all the CSS files as being linked out to “@import url.” There any help you can provide on this one?
Thanks for a great design!
March 8, 2010
George,
Excellent theme! I’m glad to be apart of this theme dev. and watch as it grows. I have a few questions about the @import url as well… 1st what does that mean and second how can I get access to those css files?
I’m having problems with my menu’s background and dividers showing up and would like to get in there and see what the problem is.
Hope you know how appreciative we are for your work on this theme and looking forward to 1.2
March 8, 2010
Hey George, I’m using your handgloves theme- and it’s sweet! i just don’t know how to link my twitter and flickr.. can you walk me through it?
March 11, 2010
I’m not sure what I may be doing wrong but I can’t seem to get the sidebar to activate properly. I was running WordPress 2.9.2 but downgraded to 2.7 just to see if by chance it would have better functionality since everyone seems to have tested it on that version. Any hints or tips on how to activate it (sidebar) properly? Even the styling for the sidebar doesn’t match what is shown above. Great design and can’t wait to implement it!
March 20, 2010
Shawn,
I’m not sure if George got back with you. The CSS file you are looking for is in /wp-content/handgloves/css/header.css. You are looking for line 57 specifically.
Hope this helps,
Jeremy

there seems to be a problem if I make people sign up for a accout to post or comment. When you click on comment it drops the side bar to the bottom on the post, anyone have a solution for that?
March 29, 2010
thanks for this awesome theme! i like it.
however i found one problem which i cannot solve. it has to do with the small menu… on the rigth. it somehow gets mixed up. does anyone have a solution for this? please let me know!

After installing the plugin WPCache2.0 everything worked perfectly! That’s a tip. It turns a lot of PHP into static HTML which is 20 times faster… cheers!
March 30, 2010
I have the newest version of wordpress 2.9.2. When I downloaded the hand gloves theme, it says it’s a “broken theme” and won’t let me activate. The “style sheet” is missing? Do you know how to trouble shoot this issue?
March 30, 2010
@Van S. Nguyen – You need to extract the zip file before you upload it to WordPress, as well as the theme it contains instructions and the plugins you may need.
Hope this helps

Hi,
Great theme, I would like to add a 5th “page-tab” in Handgloves options. I have adjusted navigation.php. But now I need to change the admin side of the handgloves options, but cannot find its .php file. Could you tell me where I can find it? And what I need to change to make a 5th page navigation?

Rik

April 19, 2010
Mate, first of all, good job with the theme! Looks great.
The thing is, i can’t get it to work properly. Sidebar is messed up, and i can’t setup the tabs. Can you take a look please?

April 24, 2010
@Van S Nguyen: I had the same problem. Here is the solution:
The zipped download includes both the theme AND the plugins. So, you need to open the themes folder from the zip file and upload the contents to your themes folder in WordPress. Then you open the plugins folder in the zip file and upload those three plugins (flickr-rss, schmancybox, simpletwitter) to your plugins folder in WordPress. Once you’ve done this, you’ll see the theme correctly and it’s no longer showing as broken. Good luck!
April 25, 2010
Hi,
I love this theme and I’m in the process of building my site with it but I’m having on small problem.
I have changed the settings in wordpress so that the index of my blog shows a static page and I have made a ‘latest posts’ page to show my latest posts. This all seems to be working fine but the menu does not seem to work correctly now. When you click the ‘latest posts’ tab the ‘home’ tab takes on the’active’ class but I obviously want the ‘latest posts’ to be active. I have tried messing round with navigation.php to try and remove some of the javascript for that particular tab but had no luck. I not so great with javascript so I’m hoping you can give a simple explanation.solution for this.
Thanks!
April 26, 2010
Yo,
Disregard last comment, problem solved by hardcoding the menu into my page templates, not an ideal solution but at least it’s working.
Thanks again for sharing the theme.

I am having a hard time trying to get all of my side bar plug-ins to work. can any one help me getting my flickr RSS working? site is kismahairandspa.com/blog Thank you!

downloaded your theme but wp says style sheet is missing so it doesn’t show up in my theme options. tried deleting via ftp and cant cause it says “directory not empty”. So now i have two versions of your theme installed on my server but neither will work and neither can be deleted. Any suggestions? It’s a nice theme.
May 13, 2010
Hey, I’m wanting to keep that box up the top with the “Posts/Twitter/Flickr” tabs… except the box completely disappears whenever I add widgets to the sidebar… is there a way to keep the box whilst being able to add whatever widgets I’d like to have beneath it?
Thanks,
Alex
May 17, 2010
Hello. I am a newbie with this WP stuff.
I’ve unzipped the file on my MAC and tried to upload the folders,’Theme’ and ‘Plug-ins’ via FTP.
The situation is the FTP won’t accept the whole Theme folder at once, instead it requires me to open that folder down to the level showing the .php files etc. And then I can upload those folders one at a time, but that just seems wrong.
I don’t know much, but that doesn’t seem right.
Any suggestions?
I hope the situation can be resolved so I can enjoy this very nice theme.
May 19, 2010
How can I get this theme to work? I am using FTP FileZilla and I transfer and it appears to be successfull.
Alas, on the WP Theme page it says:
‘Stylesheet is missing’
I noticed someone posted this same question earlier, but never got a response. Can anyone help me out? How do I fix this?
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I love the look of Handgloves but when I went to install it I got the style sheet error that someone mentioned above.
ANy thoughts?
May 27, 2010
oops. I’ve sussed it. RTFM.

I have a question about adding images to posts. Is there a way to make it so that the images aren’t automatically aligned to the left? (Any time I add an image, even if I have it set to center, it goes to the left)
May 29, 2010
loving the theme! i’m also trying to add a 5th tab as a “contact” page.
I added it in the theme functions, and in the admin settings. except now the 5th tab overlaps on the header. is there a way i can adjust the width of the page for the 5th tab to be in the right place?
June 10, 2010
@jordan, @George (Admin), @Nicholas and anyone else who was having problems with Posts, Twitter, and Flickr all showing up in the sidebar at the same time, and not changing as they should. I had the same problem, and I was able to trace it to the “jquery.cookie.js” file. For some reason, it was giving a 404 error even though it was there and I could see it in my FTP browser. I solved it by taking out the middle dot, so its just “jquerycookie.js” (and then changing header.php accordingly). I have no idea why that simple renaming allows for the server to see it, but maybe that will help some of you.
June 10, 2010
also, great work on the theme. I really dig it.
June 20, 2010
I have a problem adding new widgets in the sidebar.
.
it looks awful an the old stuff simply disappear
somebody out there knows a solution?
thanks

Hi, I’m running across the problem where the posts/twitter/flickr stacks. I tried Jon’s suggestion but it didn’t work. Could anyone help?
Also, the theme is great looking, thanks for making it.
June 23, 2010
I am having a similar issue to one of the other posters here. I have my homepage as a static homepage, and assigned the posts page to a page I created called Blog. However, now the menu does not work properly. The 3 other tabs work fine: they highlight when clicked. However, when I click the Blog tab, it brings me to the correct page but no tabs are highlighted. For some reason with the static homepage, it cannot tell that the Blog page is “active”. A solution would be terrific because I love the theme and would hate to have to switch!
June 25, 2010
I love this WP theme and just installed it, however something funky is going on in the side menu. I downloaded everything correctly and activated the plugin but i still can’t figure out what is going on. Could someone help me out PLEASE!?

First let me thank George and his superb theme here for offering these theme for free. You guys, did a great visually pleasing theme here.
I’m using this theme on my blog now, http://mydailyhabit.co.cc/. To others wondering how to solve the sidebar issues, the widgetization is not yet that perfect. I hard coded my sidebar widgets into sidebar.php. I also am wondering why the comments on my pages isn’t expandable. Hope your team will offer an update on this theme, for free still! Thanks again!

Thanks so much, I have been trying everything and need to fix it asap.

LOVE this theme but can you PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE fix the broken comments for “Pages”. You can only comment on posts. Thanks!

No text seems to appear in the main navigation when I preview or apply this theme.
The navigation where this example has Blog, Release Notes, About, and Contact is the one I am referring to.
Any hints as to why this may be would be greatly appreciated.

Hi everyone. I know th e question is getting old, but is there anyway we could get a vast majority o plugin to work without handgloves sidebar to go nuts ? I love the job done with this template, but I get frustrated when I activate my JQuery plugins (lightbox, flash gallery…)
