Handgloves Theme for WordPress

handgloves wordpress theme

Handgloves is a clean, feature rich WordPress theme set in Helvetica.

It is a blogging theme for people who love social media. The sidebar makes a prominent feature of Flickr, Twitter & your latest posts. It has a range of bespoke WP functions such as splitting the archives by year into separate ULs and dynamic features are powered by jQuery 1.2.3

Handgloves was built as an opportunity to learn more about the WP platform and is my first fully featured theme release. I’m more than happy for you to take it, change it, make it your own. As such I have released under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 2.0 License. This means?

Installation & Requirements

Handgloves has only been tested on WP 2.7 and upwards though I would imagine it will work fine on previous versions. The download package comes bundled with the key plugins that it is built to work with (though if you want to get in there and change them – feel free).

The menu is now powered by a back-end options panel! I recognised that this was a big problem in version 1.0 and now thanks to Jeremy Boyd it’s fully integrated.

Flickr support is provided by the excellent Flickr-RSS plugin

Twitter support is provided by a modified version of the Simple-Twitter plugin (supplied)

Download Handgloves

Beautiful theme George. The comments are refreshing. But does it support threaded comments (since you mentioned testing in WP2.7 but I don’t see the reply button in the comments section)

And also, just wondering when will the next update be released?

Hi Josh,
I’m currently working on another iteration for mid-november loose outline of what’s going to be included is…

- Support for threaded comments
- Support for sub-pages
- Alternative colour-schemes
- Multi-tweet support in the sidebar

i’ll keep you posted :)

Sounds awesome! Keep up the amazing work.

p.s. I notice your long reply has forced a scroll bar to come up in the reply itself. I thought it would be nicer if the box just expanded along with the length of the comment. My 2 cents. Or it could be just a safari issue.

Fantastic theme! One of the top 2 themes I have ever used. However I am having some trouble figuring out how to get it to display the “posts twitter flickr” menu at the top like this one does. In fact much of my sidebar’s style looks disfigured. Could you post a “how to” page for setting this stuff up?

I also read your theme makes it easy to post images, but I’m not sure of how it makes it easy. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Oh wait I got it. If you add any widget it removes the sidebar you have. Plus I have a lot of categories and noticed they overlap.

Hello! Fantastic theme. Any sense as to why a Lightbox plugin might break the sidebar? You can see what I mean at the site I’m linking to. I’m no developer, so a bit out of my league. Much appreciated, and keep up the great work!

Hi George, I think it’s brilliant.

Check it out here: http://oliveandarrow.com/intelect/

Was a breeze to set-up; everything worked out of the box.

Thanks for the good work

Hello,

Love the theme, but the top jquery links do not work like on your site… What do I do? I looked into the schmancy box settings, is this where I looked for help and what I need to change on the navigation.php file. I used the no subs file. Let me know if you can help me out.

Thanks

Great look and feel, very clean! Does this theme have the option to set maximum widths of the images in the posts? I do photography and I am looking to post pics that are at least 700px wide. Also, is there different options for how comments are left? I’m not too fond of the 2 column comments section with scroll. Thanks! Love it.

Hi, I too am waiting for the new release, any idea as to when it is coming out? Did you add threaded comment option? Where can I go to change the color of the background box behind categories, comments and sidebar features? Thanks!

I am having an install problem; it says I’m missing stylesheets?

“Theme Install Failed.”

Help?

Dominik
January 21, 2010

Hi, the install problem is ’cause the zip contains more folders than just the Themefolder, plugins for the theme and so on. Just unzip it on your computer and then upload the “Handgloves”-Theme via ftp or something.

But… the Theme is awesome, but it doesn’t seem to work with wp 2.9.1 :-( Just tried it today and it messed up my wp cache and the comments are not funtioning.

I wait for the new version, hope George would give a sign..

Best regards from germany (so, this is my excuse for the bad english i’m using ;) )

Version 1.1 is live! Tested up to 2.9.1, but always looking for feedback :)

Dominik
January 26, 2010

Fine! :) Testing around atm… comments seems functioning now, even with si captcha. First thing i noticed is, the change of colours at the horizontal menu isn’t there anymore. Wanted? If yes, i don’t like it but can live with it, if not, can u fix it? ;-) Looked more clear with different colors (as it is here).

ps: Excuse my bad english, as i said in a previous comment, i’m german. I want to make a german translation of this theme now, if you want i can send you the updated files then. But first, please answer the question with the menu bar :)

Dominik
January 26, 2010

Ah well, my fault with the menu bar. Linked everything to home (left it standard), so everything was white, now i added some sites and… works! :-)

Dominik
January 26, 2010

Ok, after a while of testing i can say, it seems to work fine :-) Thank you for this marvellous theme. Just a few suggestions that i think would be nice:

First problem: The Comments are arranged left/right, not as usual below. It might be confusing for users being familiar with the “normal” commentpage-design. Also, there is no time given, the comments are just saying the current date.

Solution: Is it possible to make a choice in the admin-panel of the theme between “normal” design and your design? And secondly, is it possible to post the time when a comment was written too?

Second Problem: The Horizontal Menu is laid out for (static) wordpress sites. I want to use my categories as Menu, so i now have to make templates for each site and link the category-content to the site. It’s a bit complicated, especially for wp-newbies.

Solution: Is it possible to link the Sites directly to the categories in the Theme-Options? I think it would be much easier.

So, these were my suggestions of improving this very nice theme. I hope i’m not in the spam-folder now cause of this much comments ;-) But i really like this theme and i want to help improve it :-)

Greetings from germany,

Dominik

January 26, 2010

Hi Dominic,

Thanks for the feedback!

The comment design in Version 1.0 was a bit buggy so I thought it would be good to switch to ‘Masonry’ style to help solve the internal scrolling. I like the idea of having an alternative choice for single column comments option – I will see if this is something I can work in, in version 1.2

I’m not sure what you mean about the second problem – did you want to link to external pages from the main navigation?

Keep the feedback coming!
Cheers,
George

Dominik
January 26, 2010

The Categories-Thing… my example: I want the categories “politics”, “sports” and another static site, the contact form perhaps, in my blog. So the top horizontal menu should show “Home”, “Politics”, “Sports”, “Contact”(with descriptions). If i click on “Home” => start page (with all blog entries), “politics” => shows all posts under the category politics, “sports” shows all entries of sports and “contact” shows a contact form.

At the handgloves-options at adminpanel, i can just choose sites i made, not categories. But i want! *whining* ;-)

Get my point now? ;-)

Another thing i noticed: The right sidebar disappears if i add another widget from the admin panel. Also, there is no/just a very creepy CSS for the widgets (if someone decides to use his own widget-sidebar). Can u make a css for those? ;)

Greetings,

Dominik

A widgetized sidebar is something I am working on in my personal version of HG. I can probably merge those with George’s for another release.

As for the categories. I don’t know how much work will need to go into it, but we can always try.

George (Admin)

@doublesidedcoin – it’s a standard zip file (compressed on a mac) so you shouldn’t have any issues, I would suggest you try and re-download the file, perhaps it’s corrupt or incomplete?

Awesome theme, and I just started using it. The only issue I am having is the Posts/twitter/flicker sidebar is appearing on top of each other. But keep up the good work!

George (Admin)

@jordan sounds like a JavaScript issue, Handgloves is based on jQuery so try disabling other plugins that use JS e.g. Lightbox/Galleries.

March 4, 2010

Hey George, I love the theme and am using it for my site now…but I’m curious about is how to access some of the CSS stuff. The only adjustment I really want to make is to just make the WP title slightly smaller so that all of the words fit on one line, rather than breaking into two lines. But when I open the Stylesheet in the Editor, it shows all the CSS files as being linked out to “@import url.” There any help you can provide on this one?

Thanks for a great design!

Seth
March 8, 2010

George,

Excellent theme! I’m glad to be apart of this theme dev. and watch as it grows. I have a few questions about the @import url as well… 1st what does that mean and second how can I get access to those css files?

I’m having problems with my menu’s background and dividers showing up and would like to get in there and see what the problem is.

Hope you know how appreciative we are for your work on this theme and looking forward to 1.2

March 11, 2010

I’m not sure what I may be doing wrong but I can’t seem to get the sidebar to activate properly. I was running WordPress 2.9.2 but downgraded to 2.7 just to see if by chance it would have better functionality since everyone seems to have tested it on that version. Any hints or tips on how to activate it (sidebar) properly? Even the styling for the sidebar doesn’t match what is shown above. Great design and can’t wait to implement it!

Jeremy
March 20, 2010

Shawn,

I’m not sure if George got back with you. The CSS file you are looking for is in /wp-content/handgloves/css/header.css. You are looking for line 57 specifically.

Hope this helps,
Jeremy

I have the newest version of wordpress 2.9.2. When I downloaded the hand gloves theme, it says it’s a “broken theme” and won’t let me activate. The “style sheet” is missing? Do you know how to trouble shoot this issue?

George (Admin)
March 30, 2010

@Van S. Nguyen – You need to extract the zip file before you upload it to WordPress, as well as the theme it contains instructions and the plugins you may need.

Hope this helps :)

Hi,
Great theme, I would like to add a 5th “page-tab” in Handgloves options. I have adjusted navigation.php. But now I need to change the admin side of the handgloves options, but cannot find its .php file. Could you tell me where I can find it? And what I need to change to make a 5th page navigation?

April 24, 2010

@Van S Nguyen: I had the same problem. Here is the solution:

The zipped download includes both the theme AND the plugins. So, you need to open the themes folder from the zip file and upload the contents to your themes folder in WordPress. Then you open the plugins folder in the zip file and upload those three plugins (flickr-rss, schmancybox, simpletwitter) to your plugins folder in WordPress. Once you’ve done this, you’ll see the theme correctly and it’s no longer showing as broken. Good luck! :-)

April 25, 2010

Hi,
I love this theme and I’m in the process of building my site with it but I’m having on small problem.
I have changed the settings in wordpress so that the index of my blog shows a static page and I have made a ‘latest posts’ page to show my latest posts. This all seems to be working fine but the menu does not seem to work correctly now. When you click the ‘latest posts’ tab the ‘home’ tab takes on the’active’ class but I obviously want the ‘latest posts’ to be active. I have tried messing round with navigation.php to try and remove some of the javascript for that particular tab but had no luck. I not so great with javascript so I’m hoping you can give a simple explanation.solution for this.

Thanks!

Marieke

May 17, 2010

Hello. I am a newbie with this WP stuff.
I’ve unzipped the file on my MAC and tried to upload the folders,’Theme’ and ‘Plug-ins’ via FTP.
The situation is the FTP won’t accept the whole Theme folder at once, instead it requires me to open that folder down to the level showing the .php files etc. And then I can upload those folders one at a time, but that just seems wrong.
I don’t know much, but that doesn’t seem right.
Any suggestions?
I hope the situation can be resolved so I can enjoy this very nice theme.

June 10, 2010

@jordan, @George (Admin), @Nicholas and anyone else who was having problems with Posts, Twitter, and Flickr all showing up in the sidebar at the same time, and not changing as they should. I had the same problem, and I was able to trace it to the “jquery.cookie.js” file. For some reason, it was giving a 404 error even though it was there and I could see it in my FTP browser. I solved it by taking out the middle dot, so its just “jquerycookie.js” (and then changing header.php accordingly). I have no idea why that simple renaming allows for the server to see it, but maybe that will help some of you.

I am having a similar issue to one of the other posters here. I have my homepage as a static homepage, and assigned the posts page to a page I created called Blog. However, now the menu does not work properly. The 3 other tabs work fine: they highlight when clicked. However, when I click the Blog tab, it brings me to the correct page but no tabs are highlighted. For some reason with the static homepage, it cannot tell that the Blog page is “active”. A solution would be terrific because I love the theme and would hate to have to switch!
